Hmm, not seeing my earlier comment here and loved this story so much I feel compelled to repost. I am in awe of this writer's ability to weave plot and detail so seamlessly, so naturally. Would happily read massive tomes writtten by Ms. Vitucci.

I enjoyed this a good deal. It was gentle, and funny, and reminds me of how amusing families and their love for each other can be. It reinforces that love comes from the ability to accept someone as they are. There is a deep recognition by Stefani Torres of how a family's love for each other reveals itself in mock conflict. Excellent work.

I just reread this piece, again, today. I still have a copy of it on my hard drive from when you first wrote it - before blogging became a means to self-publish. It moved me and made me laugh as much today, as it did the first time I read it. The night Emily died, how scared we were; the night we camped out and Phil lit the firecracker, and how scared we were in such a different way. The other day, I cleaned out a closet, and found a patchwork quilt Mom had been working on before she died. She'd pulled it out after years of it sitting in her closet, when she first got sick. It ended up, unfinished, in the back of mine. It's made of patches of material she had left over from the outfits she'd made Lori and me, as well as patches of material she'd traded with your mom, from outfits made for you and Jan over the years. I can remember each patch, each outfit. Great women, our moms. Joyce would be so proud of your work, Kate. Keep writing.
